Jean-Jacques Amelot de Chaillou (born April 30, 1689 in Châtillon-sur-Indre , † May 7, 1749 in Paris ) was a French politician, foreign minister and member of the Académie française .

life and work

Jean-Jacques Amelot de Chaillou came from a family of high civil servants. He received extensive training and showed both literary and mathematical and scientific interest. In 1711 he joined the state administration, proved himself in the diplomatic service in Rome, held a leading position in La Rochelle , then deputy minister of finance, and finally from 1737 to 1744 French minister of foreign affairs. He died in 1749 at the age of 60. Amelot's first marriage was to the daughter of Gio Paolo Bombarda (1716–1719).

Amelot was elected to the Académie française (seat no. 10) in 1727 and in 1741 as honorary member of the Académie des sciences . He was a holder of the Order of Michael and the Order of the Holy Spirit . He left no writings.
