Jean-Jacques Favier (born April 13, 1949 in Kehl , Germany ) is a former French astronaut .
biography
Scientific activity
Favier received a degree in engineering from the National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble in 1972. In 1976 he received a doctorate in engineering and in 1977 a doctorate in metallurgy from the University of Grenoble. After his training he was advisor to the director of the materials research center of the French Atomic Energy Commission for the MEPHISTO program.
Astronaut activity
In September 1985, Favier was selected as an astronaut candidate by the French space agency CNES . Later, Favier was one of 61 European and six French candidates in the ESA selection in 1991. He was not accepted into the European Astronaut Corps. Favier was on the backup team for the space shuttle mission STS-65 in 1992 .
Favier started on June 20, 1996 as a payload specialist with the space shuttle Columbia ( STS-78 ) on the longest flight of a space shuttle (16d 21h 48m). The task was weightlessness experiments in the Life and Microgravity Spacelab (LMS), which were needed as a basis for future experiments on the International Space Station (ISS).
Since September 1999 he has been Deputy Director of Space Technology at CNES.
Private
Jean-Jacques Favier has four children with his wife Michele.
