Jean-Joseph Weerts

Jean-Joseph Weerts (born May 1, 1846 in Roubaix , † January 28, 1927 in Paris ) was a French academic painter of Belgian descent.

biography

Weerts received his first drawing lessons from his father of the same name (1807-1883), a mechanical engineer. From 1858 he attended the Académie des Beaux-arts de Roubaix and in 1867 enrolled at the Paris State University of Fine Arts . There he worked in the studios of Alexandre Cabanel .

His oeuvre includes around 700 paintings, mostly with historical or religious themes. For The Death of Bara , he was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1884 .

His grave is in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
