Jean-Louis Cazes (born October 2, 1951 in Bayonne ) is a former French football player and coach .

Player career

Cazes started playing football at two small clubs in his hometown of Bayonne. As a teenager, his decision against football seemed to have been made when he played rugby from 1967 to 1969 , but then returned to his club. He drew the attention of the AS Saint-Étienne talent scouts and was accepted into the professional club in 1971. However, neither Albert Batteux nor Robert Herbin as coach offered him any prospects for a place in the team. He therefore played for the reserve team, with whom he was able to win the third division championship in the 1974/75 season. At the same time he made his debut in the first division during the season and thanks to his one use had a share in winning the championship, which is therefore credited to him as a title.

Despite his hopeless role at Saint-Étienne , Cazes was able to recommend himself thanks to his performances in the reserve team at first division rivals SEC Bastia in Corsica , where he was signed in 1975 after he had previously completed a three-week trial program. Unlike in Saint-Étienne, the coach with Pierre Cahuzac relied on him, so that the 23-year-old at the time of the change established himself as a regular player from the start. In this role he experienced the 1977/78 UEFA Cup season , in which the team reached the final. Cazes was on the field in both finals against PSV Eindhoven , but failed after a 0-0 in the first leg due to a 3-0 in the second leg because of a possible title win. He then competed with the team several times in relegation battle. He celebrated the first cup success of his career when he moved into the final of the Coupe de France with Bastia in 1981 and won it 2-1 against his ex-club Saint-Étienne. At the same time, this was associated with further participation in the European competition, which was not as successful as it was four years before. A shin injury ended his time as a regular player in the 1983/84 season. An attempt to return to the first team was unsuccessful, so he ended his career after a year without use in 1985, during which he had played 277 first division games and scored seven goals.

Coaching career

Immediately after the end of his career, Cazes returned to his home region around Bayonne. There he took over responsibility as a coach at a lower class club from Anglet in 1990 . In 1994 he returned to one of his youth clubs from Bayonne for a year before he was again coach in Anglet in 1995. He led the team first in the fifth and then up to the fourth division and held his post until he moved to the post of sports director in 2010.
