Jean-Louis Dumas

Jean-Louis Dumas or Jean-Louis Dumas-Hermès (born February 2, 1938 in Paris ; † May 1, 2010 ibid) was a French entrepreneur.

Life

Dumas came from the French Hermès dynasty. His father was Robert Dumas-Hermès (1898–1978), the son-in-law of Émile-Maurice Hermès (1871–1951), who in turn was the grandson of the Hermès company founder Thierry Hermès (1801–1871). Dumas attended the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . In 1962 he married the architect Rena Gregoriadès († 2009), who later designed the Hermès shops. In 1978 Dumas took over the management of the luxury goods company Hermès from his father. Dumas is credited with the successful restructuring and rejuvenation of the company from the 1980s onwards to a highly profitable, family-owned global group through numerous initiatives. Between 1978 and 2009, Hermès' annual sales increased fifty-fold. Under Dumas' leadership, well-known designers such as Martin Margiela and Jean-Paul Gaultier were hired for Hermès. The Birkin Bag - next to the Kelly Bag, the high-priced Hermès bestseller in the handbag sector since 1986 - the company owes to a meeting between Dumas and actress Jane Birkin on board the Concorde in 1984. Dumas led the company as chairman until 2006. After Dumas became a non-family member of Hermès' managing director for the first time in history with Hermès manager Patrick Thomas. Dumas, who suffered from Parkinson's for many years , died at home in Paris in 2010. His daughter Sandrine Dumas (* 1963) is a film actress , his son Pierre-Alexis Dumas (* 1967) is the artistic director of Hermès.
