Jean-Paul van Gastel (born April 28, 1972 in Breda ) is a former Dutch soccer player and current soccer coach .

Career

Van Gastel started his career as a youth player at the small BSV Boeimeer, later he moved to the traditional club NAC Breda .

When he was not accepted into the professional team at NAC, he moved to Willem II Tilburg for the 1990/91 season . He made his debut for Willem II on January 27, 1991, in a 5-0 win against FC Den Bosch in the Dutch Eredivisie . As a result, he became the star of the team due to his technical skills and dangerous set pieces. After six successful years, Van Gastel attracted the interest of several clubs, which made it impossible for Willem II to keep the crowd's favorite.

For the 1996/97 season, Van Gastel moved to Feyenoord Rotterdam within the league for the equivalent of around € 2 million . He had his most successful time in Rotterdam. He made his debut in the Dutch national football team , was once Dutch champion and Johan Cruyff Schaal winner. In 2000 a serious injury followed, which should have a significant impact on his career. He was out for the rest of the season and was only able to celebrate his comeback in a test match in the 2001/02 season. Feyenoord had brought in the meantime a replacement for his position and gave it then to Italy to Ternana Calcio in Serie B from.

In Ternana, the injury-plagued van Gastel could no longer find his form and only played seven games in which he failed to score.

Nevertheless, he was the 2002-03 season per player exchange for Christian Terni in the Serie A to Como Calcio transferred. This exchange only came about because the Como trainer at the time wanted a specialist for standard situations on the team. However, when he was able to sign two more free-kick and penalty-kick specialists in Denis Godeas and Nikola Lazetić , there was no more space for van Gastel in the team. He didn't play a single game for Como, after which his contract was terminated.

Van Gastel couldn't find a new club and stayed fit at De Graafschap until the winter break . For the second half of the 2002/03 season, he received a contract for half a year with De Graafschap. He completed 13 more games in which he scored two goals and then ended his career.

Coaching career

After his professional career, Van Gastel took over the position of U-19 coach from Willem II Tilburg from 2004 to 2005 . On June 30, 2005, he was taken on by Feyenoord Rotterdam's U-19 team , which he still looks after today.

National team

On August 31, 1996 he made his debut for the Dutch national football team against Brazil . He came on in the 70th minute for Wim Jonk and scored a goal. It is interesting that he also played his fifth and last international match against Brazil. Like his debut, this ended 2-2. Van Gastel came on for Aron Winter in the 46th minute .

In total, he played five games for the Netherlands, in which he scored two goals.
