Jean-Philippe Primard (born October 20, 1962 in Toulouse ) is a former French football player and later coach .

Player career

Primard began playing football as a child and was initially a goalkeeper before being moved to the position of defender by his coach at the time. His father's occupation formed the occasion for a move from the Pyrenees to Provence , where he first played at AS Aix before he was accepted into the youth department of the professional club Olympique Marseille in 1975. After winning the Coupe Gambardella in 1979, he turned his back on Marseille a year later and moved with his parents to Saint-Étienne, where he joined the local professional club AS Saint-Étienne .

At Saint-Étienne he was initially intended for the third team, but was able to quickly work his way up to the second selection and also made the jump into a French youth selection, for which he took part in a European Championship. After returning from a trip with the youth national team, in which he was one of the regular players, he made his professional debut in the cup semi-finals in 1981 . When defender Bernard Gardon injured himself in the final of the same year, Primard came into play for him, but could not avert the 2-1 defeat against SEC Bastia . In the course of the season 1981/82 he reached his first division debut, even if it remained in one game during the season; he also booked the only two appearances in European competition of his entire career.

He also played a minor role in the team until he had to accept relegation to the second division with the team in 1984. In the second highest French division, he fought for a regular place; with the second division championship in 1986 he won his only senior title and at the same time managed to get promoted again. This was followed by a few years as a regular player, where he mostly had to compete in the relegation battle, which never ended with the fall in the second division. Due to the arrival of Sylvain Kastendeuch , who was signed up in 1990 , he lost his place in the first team, but he remained loyal to the club. From then on it was always injuries or bans that enabled him to temporarily return to the starting eleven; the number of times he was used continued to decrease with increasing age. After he last played exclusively for the reserve, he decided in 1996 at the age of 33 to end his career after 157 first division games with one goal and 51 second division games without a goal.

Coaching career

Immediately after his active career, Primard took over responsibility for coaching the under 13s at his ex-club Saint-Étienne. He then carried out this position in several of the club's youth teams until he was transferred to the reserve team in 2007. From 2010 on, he headed the club's youth department and returned to the second team in 2012.
