Bachelet had worked in Russia as a newsreel cameraman for the Gaumont film company from 1912 to 1914 . When the war broke out, he returned to France, where he began photographing feature films in 1923 as head cameraman. From the following year until the outbreak of the Second World War , Bachelet maintained an irregular collaboration with Jean Renoir for a total of 15 years , for whom he directed ten films. In addition to a number of secondary works, he also photographed masterful Renoir productions such as Nana and The Rules of the Game .
In addition, Bachelet was a regular contributor to the films Sacha Guitry , for whose productions he also stood behind the camera after 1945. In the mid-50s, Bachelet largely withdrew from film and settled in southern France.
