Jean Battier
Jean Battier (* 1537 in Saint-Symphorien-le-Château ; † 1602 in Basel ) was a silk merchant from France and one of the ancestors of the Battier family in Basel.
Life
Jean Battier was a Huguenot from the Rhone Valley and came with his brother Jacques (1543-1608) via Geneva to Basel, where he acquired citizenship in 1569. He married a daughter of the doctor Jean Bauhin . As a silk merchant, he was involved in building up an important line of business in Basel, the trimmings , for the centuries that followed. His descendants were active in the silk and cloth trade, in book printing and as scholars.
