Hans "Jean" Benda (* 1874 ; † 1949 ) was a German violinist and violin teacher.

Life

Origin and education

Hans Benda comes from the Benda family of musicians who have been active since the 19th century . His mother, Johanna Benda, born in 1838, was a pianist who was friends with Clara Schumann and played four hands with her. She let him study the violin since he was 6 years old. Since artists such as Eugen d'Albert , Anton Rubinstein and Joseph Joachim were often guests of the family , Joseph Joachim soon became interested in the young Benda and recommended him to Hugo Heermann , a representative of the Franco-Belgian violin school. From 1900 he studied with Henri Marteau , who invited him to Berlin as the only co-worker in violin lessons, where he was appointed to succeed Joseph Joachim for the virtuoso classes at the "Royal Academy of Music". Today (2012) Francois Benda , a grandson of this violinist, teaches as a professor for clarinet at the same university, which is now called the “ Berlin University of the Arts ”.

Act

Hans (Jean) Benda was one of the first to standardize the various violin schools, as his family traditionally played according to the principles of the German school and he used the principles of the Franco-Belgian school as the basis for his teaching, including the technique of " flying spiccatos ”. He also trained prominent violinists as a professor at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main. His "Etüden-Kapricen op. 45" for violin, dedicated to Henri Marteau and published in Leipzig, cemented his reputation as a violin virtuoso and violin teacher. They were introduced at the “Conservatoire National de Paris” because of their new techniques and their high musical value. These compositions are still used today in the training of violinists. Jean Benda has also appeared as the editor and arranger of various works, adaptations and cadences of the violin repertoire.

The violinist Lola Benda and the pianist, composer and piano teacher Sebastian Benda emerged from his marriage to the pianist Dora Benda-Hamann .
