Jean Benner
Jean Benner (born March 28, 1836 in Mulhouse in Alsace , † October 28, 1906 in Paris ) was a French painter and twin brother of the painter Emmanuel Benner .
Father of Jean and his twin brother Emmanuel Benner (1836-1896) was the painter and textile designer Jean Benner-Fries.
The twin brothers Benner were initially designers for various Mülhausen companies. At the age of 30, Jean Benner studied art in Paris; together with Léon Bonnat (1833–1922) and Jean-Jacques Henner (1829–1905), and probably also with his brother Emmanuel. He exhibited his paintings in the Paris Salon of 1868. Benner portrayed Henner in 1899; Henner had previously portrayed Benner in 1863.
Jean Benner mainly painted still lifes, portraits, genre paintings and female nudes. He lived and painted for a time on the Italian island of Capri, which at that time, in the last third of the 19th century, was a European artist colony.
