Jean Canfield

Ella Jean Canfield (born October 4, 1918 in Westmoreland , Prince Edward Island , † December 31, 2000 ) was a Canadian politician ( Prince Edward Island Liberal Party ).

Canfield was the first woman to be elected to the Prince Edward Island Legislative Assembly and the first to serve on the provincial government. Canfield first appeared in the 1966 election in the electoral district of 1st Queens , but lost to Frank Myers . In 1970 she ran again and was successful. In 1974 she was re-elected, but was defeated in 1979. From October 10, 1972 to May 2, 1974 she was Minister without Portfolio and Minister responsible for the "PEI Housing Authority" in the government of Alex Campbell . In 2005, the Canadian government announced that a new office building in Charlottetown would be named after her.
