Jean Deroc

Jean Deroc (born May 5, 1925 in Zurich ; † December 30, 2015 in Windisch AG ) was a Swiss choreographer .

Life

After initial training with Mario Volkart in Zurich, Jean Deroc had the opportunity in 1943 at the age of eighteen to perform as a soloist in the Zurich Opera House (the then city theater). In the late 1940s Deroc continued his training at Studio Wacker in Paris, among others with the Russian dance teacher Olga Preobrajenska from 1947 to 1950.

He had engagements as a soloist at the Comédie-Française in Paris in 1948, at the Malmö stadsteater (Sweden) in 1951/52, at the Berliner Musikfestwochen (later the Berliner Festspiele ) in 1952 and as a 1er danseur at the Opéra National de Lyon from 1953/54 .

Deroc worked as a choreographer at the Stadttheater St. Gallen 1954/55, the Stadttheater Luzern 1957/59, the Graz Opera House 1959/61, the Theater am Goetheplatz Bremen 1961/64, the Teatro La Fenice Venice 1979 and the Sofia Opera House 1991.

With his Swiss chamber ballet, which he founded after returning to Switzerland in 1965, he brought modern dance and jazz dance to the stage in addition to classical ballet. The Swiss Chamber Ballet is the longest-running independent ballet troupe in Switzerland.

In 1973 Deroc brought the Königsfeld Festival into being, in which sacred and historical themes are presented using the means of dance.

In 1974, Deroc was one of the initiators of the founding of the professional association of Swiss dance professionals dansesuisse (original name of the Swiss umbrella organization for professionals in artistic dance - SDT ).
