Jean François (born January 21, 1722 in Jehonville , † April 22, 1791 in Senones ) was a French Benedictine , historian and Romanist .

life and work

Dom Jean François, who came from the Bouillon area (Belgium) ( Walloon Region ), entered the Benedictine order in 1740 (Congregation of the Abbey of Saint-Vanne (Verdun) ). He worked in various monasteries in Eastern France, for example as a theology professor in the Hautvillers Abbey , and then from 1757 in the Saint Arnulf Abbey in Metz . His scientific work earned him membership in the Société germano-bénédictine (founded by Olivier Légipont in 1752 ) and the Académie royale de Metz (founded in 1757). The expensive printing of his books led to financial difficulties, which is why he was relieved of his position as prior.

Dom François published important works on the history of the Benedictine order as well as on the history of the city of Metz, as well as two dictionaries that are of interest for the old French and for the regional Lorraine and Walloon forms of the French language.
