Jean François Aimé (Théophile, Gottlieb) Philippe Gaudin (born March 18, 1766 in Longirod , † July 14, 1833 in Nyon ) was a Swiss pastor and naturalist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Gaudin ".

Live and act

The son of a pastor attended the Collège de Genève from 1781 and then studied theology at the University of Zurich . His interest in botany was aroused during numerous excursions during this time, which he undertook in the vicinity of Zurich.

After completing his studies, Gaudin became a pastor, initially from 1795 to 1817 in the German parish of Nyon, where he also taught mathematics and natural history. From 1817 to 1821 he was in charge of the parish in Longirod and in 1821 was appointed first pastor of the Reformed Church in Nyon, where he worked until 1833.

In addition to his main job, he remained connected to natural history and botany throughout his life. In 1815 he founded the Helvetic Society for Natural History together with Henry-Albert Gosse . For his services, he was appointed honorary professor of botany at the Lausanne Academy in 1820 . In 1811 his work Agrostologia helvetica was published , a description of grasses that made him known far beyond Switzerland.

From 1828 to 1833 he worked on the Flora helvetica , which his student Jean-Pierre Monnard completed and published in 1836. After his death, his herbarium went to the Parisian botanist Jean Gay . After his death, it was bought back by Joseph Dalton Hooker , director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in London, and returned to the Botanical Museum of the Canton of Vaud in Lausanne in exchange for another collection in 1878.

Taxa named after Gaudin

In his honor the genus Gaudinia P.Beauv. the plant family of the sweet grasses (Poaceae).

The plant species Gaudin's laser herb ( Laserpitium gaudinii ) and Gaudin's meadow knapweed ( Centaurea jacea subsp. Gaudinii ) are named after him.
