Jean Justin Monlezun (* 1800 in Aignan ; † June 3, 1859 in Auch ) was a French canon and amateur historian. He is the author of the monumental work "L'Histoire de la Gascogne depuis les temps les plus reculés jusqu'à nos jours", which appeared in Auch between 1846 and 1859.

Monlezun was a priest in Castelnau-d'Arbieu , later in Barran . Due to his work on the history of Gascony, he was appointed by the Archbishop of Auch , Nicolas-Augustin de la Croix d'Azolette, titular bomber at the cathedral of Auch and thus released from his priesthood.

L'Histoire de la Gascogne

Monlezun's "History of Gascony from the earliest times to our days" comprises 6 volumes and a supplementary volume. It is still widely used today, although it is rather useless as a source:

  • For the early Middle Ages, Montlezun relies on the Charter of Alaon , which a few years after the publication of the work (1856) by Joseph-François Rabanis was exposed as a forgery of the 17th century.
  • In addition, Monlezun gives numerous facts in his work that he does not prove and for which no evidence is known.
