The Hintere Rotspitze ( Italian Cima Rossa di Saènt ) is a 3347 meter high mountain in the Zufrittkamm , also called Marteller Hauptkamm on this section , a mountain range of the Ortler Alps in the southern Eastern Alps . It lies exactly on the border between the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Trentino in the Stilfserjoch National Park . To the northeast, southeast and west it sends ridges partially covered with firn . The easily accessible summit offers a good view. The Hintere Rotspitze was first climbed in June 1866 by the English alpinist Francis Fox Tuckett and the Swiss mountain guide Melchior Anderegg from the Sällentjoch .

Location and surroundings

The Hintere Rotspitze is surrounded by glaciers in the north, north-west and south , the Gramsenferner with its firn reaches up to the ridges to the north and west, in the south the large area of the Vedretta di Careser extends . Adjacent mountains are in the course of the northeast ridge, separated by the Sällentjoch at an altitude of 2965 meters, the Sällentspitze at 3215 meters. On the southeast ridge rises beyond the pass, Bocca di Saènt north the Cima Mezzana (3172 m) and to the west, on the Marteller main ridge that lies Rear Schranspitze with 3357 meters. In the further course to the west follow the three Venetian peaks . The next permanently inhabited settlement is Bagni di Rabbi in the Rabbi Valley , a side valley of the Val di Sole , which is about 10 kilometers to the south-east as the crow flies . Sulden is about 13 kilometers northwest.

Base and ascent

Francis Fox Tuckett and Melchior Anderegg's path in June 1866 led as part of a trip over the northeast ridge to the summit as part of a trip over the Sällentjoch. They set out from Bagni di Rabbi to explore a transition into the Martell valley. This route is still the normal route as the slightest ascent . The Rifugio Dorigoni (2,437 m), accessible from the Rabbi Valley, can serve as a base, from which the path leads in a walking time of three and a half hours in a north-westerly direction up to the Sällentjoch and on to the summit. Julius Payer came on September 1st, 1867 from the Careser Glacier over the west ridge to the Hinteren Rotspitze. The ridges are easy climbs, but lead partly through firn and as a high tour over glaciers.
