Life

Margulies was the son of Ida and Moritz Margulies. His mother came from a pious Jewish family and was active in the left-wing socialist Jewish youth organization Haschomer Hazair . There she met Moritz Margulies in 1929, and both of them became involved in the Communist Party from 1930 onwards . In the course of the February uprising in 1934 , Margulie's parents were arrested and imprisoned, after their release they fled to Czechoslovakia and later to Switzerland and on to Brussels . After the Wehrmacht invaded Belgium, Ida and Moritz Margulies fled to France with one-year-old Jean , where the family initially lived in camps and illegal accommodation. From 1942 Jean had to live hidden with a teacher while his parents were active in the resistance with forged papers. His mother was exposed shortly before the end of the war and only escaped being transported to a concentration camp when Paris was liberated by the Allies. As a result, the Margulies family returned to Vienna. Moritz Margulies died in 1964.

Ida Margulies was also involved in the Communist Party after the war, while Jean Margulies was active in the Free Austrian Youth (FÖJ). He worked in the trade union organization Trade Union Unity (GE), where he also worked for many years as a secretary, and was one of the co-founders of the union of alternative and independent trade unionists (AUGE / UG). There he held the position of federal secretary until 1990. From the mid-1980s he was involved in the green movement, where he was a member of the Vienna state parliament between 1991 and 1996. Until recently he worked for AUGE / UG and the Wiener Grünen. In the AUGE / UG he held the function of auditor until his death, with the Vienna Greens he was 100th on the state list for the 2015 state and local council elections .

Jean Margulies was the father of the politician Martin Margulies . He died on September 29, 2015 after a brief, serious illness.
