Jean Martin (politician)
Jean Martin (born February 3, 1868 in Buhl (Haut-Rhin) , † January 17, 1922 in Mulhouse ) was a German politician ( SPD Alsace-Lorraine ).
Live and act
He attended elementary school and then worked in Gebweiler from 1882 to 1889 as an office assistant and court clerk. From 1889 to 1890 he was a commercial correspondent in Dornach. In 1890 he worked in Freiburg im Breisgau as an editorial volunteer for the Oberrheinische Zeitung . From 1890 he worked as an editor of various SPD-related newspapers in Mulhouse in Alsace and Strasbourg . These included: 1890–94 Elsässische Volkszeitung (forbidden), 1902/03 Free Press for Upper Alsace and 1903–1914 Mülhausener Volkszeitung .
Together with Charles Hickel, Jean Martin was founding chairman of the workers' electoral union for Mulhouse and the surrounding area, which was founded by 21 Social Democrats on December 10, 1889 and approved by the district president on April 12, 1890.
Jean Martin represented the SPD, first in the municipal council of Mulhouse from 1902 to 1908 and from 1911 to 1918. During the First World War he was expelled from Alsace-Lorraine for political reasons. After 1918 he was allowed to return to Alsace and was head of the socialist daily "Republikaner" in Mulhouse until his death.
From 1911 to 1918 he was a member of the state parliament of the Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine for the SPD for the constituency of Mulhouse-Land .
In the years 1898 and 1903 Jean Martin ran unsuccessfully for the Reichstag in the constituency of Alsace-Lorraine 14 (Metz) .
