Jean Mone

Jean Mone (* around 1500 in Metz , † around 1548 in Brussels ) was a sculptor .

Life

Mone spent most of his career in the Netherlands , working in Brussels , Antwerp and Mechelen . He was the preferred sculptor of the emperor Charles V. The high altar in Hal near Brussels (1533) was one of his first works for the emperor. The majestic tomb for the emperor's tutor, Guillaume II. De Croÿ , Seigneur de Chièvres, in Anghien was another important work. He excelled in working with marble and was the first sculptor in the Netherlands to recreate the Italian style of the time. Mone renounced the Gothic tradition completely.
