Jean Simon
Jean Simon (born April 30, 1912 in Brest , † September 28, 2003 in Cherbourg ) was a French officer.
Career
Simon graduated from the Prytanée national militaire and the École spéciale militaire in 1933. In June 1940, he and Pierre Messmer left for Oran on a confiscated Italian ship. The ship loaded with war material was diverted to Liverpool with the help of Simon and Messmer , and the cargo was sold to the British for the benefit of France libre .
Simon was deployed in the Foreign Legion in Eritrea from 1940 ; he lost an eye in Syria in 1941. During the fighting in Italy he was promoted to battalion commander. On July 1, 1952, he was made a colonel, from 1957 to 1960 he was military attaché at the French embassy in London. Other tasks include high military functions, including in Algeria (from July 1, 1960 as Brigadier General), and from 1964 as Governor of the military region of Lyon . In 1972 he became head of the French Red Cross. He has received several awards.

In 1973 Simon retired. A section of the Boulevards des Maréchaux is named after him. From 1978 to 2002 Simon was Chancellor of the Ordre de la Liberation .
