Jeanne M. Holm (born June 23, 1921 in Portland , Oregon , † February 15, 2010 in Annapolis , Maryland ) was an American major general in the United States Air Force .

biography

Holm first joined the United States Army in 1942 and switched to the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1948 . In 1952, she was the first woman to graduate from Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama .

Between 1965 and 1973 she was director of the Women's Division in the Air Force. During this time there was not only a modernization of uniforms , but also a doubling of the number of women in the Air Force.

On July 16, 1971, she was promoted to Brigadier General . On March 1, 1973, she became Director of the Staff Council of the United States Secretary of the Air Force, and as such was promoted to Major General of the USAF on June 1, 1973 . In 1975 she was retired from active service.

Holm was the first woman to achieve the rank of brigadier general in the USAF and the first woman to be promoted to major general in the United States Armed Forces. During her career, she has also been a strong advocate of women in the Air Force and played a key role in removing restrictions on the number of women in the Air Force, expanding service positions for women, and opening up reserve officer training Corps (ROTC) and other air force schools for women.

After her retirement, she was appointed special assistant for women to US President Gerald Ford . She was political advisor to President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981 and then chaired the Veterans Administration Committee on Women's Affairs for some time in 1981, now the United States War Veterans Department .

In 1982 her specialist book "Women in the Military: An Unfinished Revolution" appeared, which became a standard work on this subject.

During her military career, she has received several awards, including the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit .
