Jeff Cotton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jeff Cotton (born May 31, 1948 in Porterville , Tulare County , California ), also known as Antennae Jimmy Semens , is an American guitarist . He is best known for his work with Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band and with Mu . In addition to slide guitar , he also plays the bass clarinet and electric bass .

Career

In 1962 Jeff Cotton moved to Lancaster with his parents . Already at the age of 14 he founded the band Merrell & The Exiles together with Merrell Fankhauser, who had several surf hits with The Impacts , and his high school friends Greg Hampton and Jim Ferguson. Later John French also belonged to the band. After the band broke up in 1966, Cotton played in Blues In A Bottle (together with John French, Mark Boston and later Bill Harkleroad ). In 1967 Cotton became a guitarist with Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, succeeding Ry Cooder . Beefheart also gave him the stage name Antennae Jimmy Semens . After working on the legendary Trout Mask Replica album , there were disputes over Beefheart's "leadership style" and Cotton left the band in 1970 after Jeff Bruschell, the Magic Band's then temporary drummer, assaulted him and broke several ribs.

After his recovery he founded the "legendary" band Mu in 1970 with Merrell Fankhauser, Randy Wimer and Larry Willey . After an unsuccessful album and a lack of commercial success, this band broke up in 1975. Recordings from 1974 for a second album were not released until the 1980s. Disaffected by the music industry, Jeff Cotton found his calling in the Christian priesthood.
