The Impacts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Impacts were an American surf rock band that formed in 1960 with the lineup Merrell Fankhauser ( guitar ), Steve Evans (guitar), John Oliver (guitar), Jack Metz alias Jack Jordan ( bass ), Martin Brown ( Hawaii -Gitarre / Steel Guitar), Joel Rose ( saxophone ) and Steve Metz ( drums ) in San Luis Obispo (where The Sentinals came from), California . The Impacts released some respectable surf rock recordings in the early 1960s. The band around the guitarist Merrell Fankhauser became known primarily through the discussion about the recording of the same name by Wipe Out , which was published shortly before the Surfaris .

biography

At the end of 1960 Merrell Fankhauser was lead guitarist with the "Impacts", who had earned their first merits as a live band in a small teenage club called "Peppermint Twist West" and covered songs by Ricky Nelson and Little Richard , for example . With their appearances in the nightclub "Rose Garden Ballroom" in Pismo Beach , California , which was owned by Joel Rose's father, they were able to expand their local fame and sometimes played as a backup band of well-known artists.

Influenced by instrumental bands such as the Ventures , Fankhauser once got a guitar lesson at a performance by the Ventures in the “Rose Garden Ballroom”, and they quickly became part of the developing surf-rock scene. During an appearance in 1962 , a talent scout became aware of the "Impacts" and, through producer Tony Hilder, organized a recording session in Ted Brinson's studio in Los Angeles . More than a dozen recordings were made in a very short time.

A few months later the band was amazed at a release on their behalf. The Del-Fi Records label released an album called Wipe Out! of the "impacts". At that time the band had never signed a record deal and never received the rights to these tracks from Tony Hilder (see also The Original Surfaris ). (It was not until 1994 that Merrell Fankhauser was able to preserve the rights to the tracks from the "Impacts" .) In another recording session in January 1963 , a modified version of Wipe Out was recorded and two other tracks, Kon Tiki and Tor-Chula .

Although the band continued to perform continuously, Merrell Fankhauser left the "Impacts" in frustration over discussions with Tony Hilder about the rights of various recordings and the taste of the release of the song of the same name, Wipe Out of the Surfaris . A year later the band broke up completely.
