The Ventures is an American instrumental rock band that was founded in 1959/1960 on the initiative of the singer Don Wilson and the electric bass guitarist Bob Bogle from Seattle in Portland . Other early members were guitarist Nole "Nookie" Edwards and drummer Mel Taylor. The Ventures have been continuously active since their inception. They had their greatest successes in the 1960s. The pieces Walk, Don't Run , Pipeline , Hawaii Five-O , Perfidia , Lullaby of the Leaves , Apache , Telstar and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue are among her best known hits. Her title The Swinging Creeper was the theme tune of the German television program ZDF- Ortszeit for many years .
In the USA , almost 40 of their albums landed in the charts and 17 of them made it into the top 40. With over 110 million albums sold, the Ventures are among the most successful bands ever. They had particular success in Japan , which is why five members of the band including Don Wilson received the Order of the Rising Sun 4th grade from the Japanese government in 2010 .
Band history
The roots of the ventures lie in the band The Impacts from Tacoma , Washington . In 1959 guitarists Bob Bogle and Don Wilson toured Washington and Idaho with various backing bands (known as The Versa-Tones and The Marksmen, among others). After a demo tape was rejected by the record studio Liberty Records, the two founded their own label called Blue Horizon. After the release of the single Cookies and Coke , they hired bassist Nokie Edwards and drummer Skip Moore and decided to form an instrumental rock band.
Influenced by the Chet Atkins album Hi Fi in Focus , the Ventures released the single Walk, Don't Run in 1960 , which was then strongly oriented towards the stereotypical beat of the English instrumental quartet The Shadows and which made them "more aggressive" with effective guitar tremolos in the style of Duane Eddy on their own label. The single became a local hit after the piece was regularly played on the Seattle radio news . Dolton Records, owner of the studios Liberty Records, took the single under license and by the summer of 1960 the song was number 2 on the US charts behind It's Now or Never by Elvis Presley . Howie Johnson replaced Moore on drums , and the Ventures began recording their debut album Walk, Don't Run .
The singles Perfidia and Ram-Bunk-Shush reached the top 40 between 1960 and 1961. During this time, the Ventures began to develop a trademark of their music. The pieces on their records were now arranged on a theme that was reflected in the respective album title. The fourth record, The Colorful Ventures , included the tracks Yellow Jacket , Red Top , Orange Fire and at least three other tracks with the word "Blue". All cover songs from many genres of 1960s music, for example twist , country , pop , spy music , psychedelic rock , swamp , garage rock or Latin American music , were released in the style of the Ventures. In the 1970s, the band covered pieces from the genres of funk , disco , reggae and soft rock .
In 1962 Howie Johnson left the band and was replaced by Mel Taylor. Nokie Edwards took over the lead guitar and Bob Bogle took over the electric bass . One of the few records not arranged around a special theme was also the most successful, The Lonely Bull , with the piece Telstar by the British rock band The Tornados . The record reached the top ten and became the second of three gold records (they received their first gold record for Walk, Don't Run ). A new version of their debut album called Walk — Don't Run '64 reached number 8 on the charts in 1964. In the mid-1960s, the ventures' success waned in the wake of the British Invasion . Nokie Edwards left the band between 1968 and 1972 and was replaced by Gerry McGee. Hawaii Five-O , the theme song of the television series of the same name , reached number 4 on the US charts in 1969.
In the early 1970s, the ventures were looking for new audiences across the Pacific in Japan . After they founded their own label for the Japanese market, Tridex Records, they sold over 40 million records there, becoming one of the most influential US music groups in Japan to date. Between 1972 and 1979 Mel Taylor left the band and was replaced by Joe Barile. At the beginning of the 1980s the quartet Wilson, Bogle, Edwards and Taylor could look back on more than twenty years of band history. Edwards left the band for good in 1984 and was replaced by Gerry McGee. Mel Taylor died on a tour of Japan in 1996 and was replaced by his son Leon. The Ventures was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008 . In June 2009, Bob Bogle died of cancer. Nokie Edwards died on March 12, 2018 as a result of hip surgery.
