Jehangir C. Tavadia

Jehangir Cowasji Tavadia (born August 15, 1897 in Tavdi , † July 4, 1955 in Hamburg ) was an Indian Iranist .

Life

He was trained at the DK Tata Anglo Vernacular Boy's School. He then earned a bachelor's degree from the John Wilson Education Society's Wilson College . In 1918 he received the Framji Sorabji Bhavnagri Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement in Avesta at the University of Mumbai's intermediate examination . His scholarship and interest in Avesta studies caught the attention of Sir Jivanji J. Modi , who sent him to Germany in 1921 for further studies. He received his doctorate as Dr. phil. at the University of Hamburg , where he served as a lecturer in Iranian Studies. During the Second World War, Tavadia was back in India and from 1940 to 1941 he held the chair of Avesta Studies at the college (now Visva-Bharati University ) in Santiniketan. After the war he resumed his work at the University of Hamburg .
