Yehuda Almog

Jehuda Kopeliowitsch Almog ( Hebrew יהודה קופילביץ אלמוג, * 1896 in the district municipality of Vilnius of today's Lithuania , Russian Empire as Jehuda Kopeliovič; † 1972 in Israel ) was an Israeli businessman and politician . He was involved in Gdud ha-awoda and the Dead Sea Salt Mine project. Therefore a settlement on the Dead Sea was named after him.

Life

Almog family lived in a Lithuanian Pale of Settlement of the former Russian Empire and he emigrated to the independence of Lithuania in the third aliyah in 1920 after Palestinian one.

Gdud ha-awoda

Almog was a friend and supporter of the Zionist activist and soldier Joseph Trumpeldor . He was engaged in Gdud ha-awoda ( Hebrew גְּדוּד הָעֲבוֹדָה, Labor corps ) and in the Gdud ha-avoda ve-ha-hagana al schem Josef Trumpeldor ( Hebrew גְּדוּד הָעֲבוֹדָה וההֲגַנָּה על־שם יוסף טרומפלדור; Joseph Trumpeldor Labor and Defense Battalion ). During this time he also changed his surname Kopeliovič to the Hebrew surname Almog.

Dead Sea salt mine project

In the 1930s Almog was one of the founders of the kibbutz Beit HaArava, a workers' settlement for the Dead Sea Works . He later took part in the exploration, settlement and development of the Dead Sea region. He helped found the Palestine Potash Company and was the first mayor of the Tamar area .

Commemoration

The Jewish settlement Almog ( Megilot regional administration ) on the north coast of the Dead Sea is named after him.
