Yehuda ben Baba
R. Jehuda ben Baba (also Juda ben Baba , Hebrew יהודה בן בבא ; around 62/65-around 132/135) was an important Jewish scholar and Tannait of the second generation. Where in the Talmud the term Hasid appears without naming, either Jehuda ben Baba or Jehuda ben Ilai is meant.
Life
His year of birth and origin are not known. He was a student of Samuel hakatan .
He especially argued with Rabbi Akiba . Soon after his death, he gave a number of its students the ordination , though Hadrian had put out the death penalty. During this ordination they were surprised by Roman soldiers. Yehuda is said to have given the ordained an opportunity to escape while he himself endured and was martyred (Bab. Sanhedrin 14a). Yehuda ben Baba is one of the ten martyrs killed since the destruction of the Second Temple.
Among his halachoths, the most important is considered to be the one who allows an aguna to enter into a new marriage, even if only one witness confirms the death of the man.
