The Jelcz 272 MEX was a bus from the Polish commercial vehicle manufacturer Jelcz . It was produced from 1963 to 1977. The bus was the licensed version of the Czechoslovakian bus Škoda 706 RTO . It was produced in parallel with the Jelcz 043 .
history
The population growth in Polish cities in the 1960s and 1970s created an increased demand for transport services, which required buses with a higher transport capacity in urban public transport . Due to the lack of Polish manufacturers and the insufficient number of imports, the idea of building the Czechoslovak Škoda 706 RTO MEX bus under license was born in 1962. The Jelcz 043, also based on the Škoda 706 RTO, had been built in Poland since 1959. A first prototype of the bus was completed in 1962. Basically the Jelcz 272 MEX corresponded to the Jelcz 043, but was adapted to the requirements of city traffic. Series production began in 1963.
construction
The chassis of the bus consisted of a riveted ladder frame. The structure was formed by a subframe made of welded steel profiles on which the outer skin was riveted. The planking consisted of sheet steel. On the right side wall there were two 0.9 m wide folding doors , the rear one behind the rear axle. Due to the position of the engine, the front door could only be arranged between the axles, which made the bus only partially suitable for one-man operation. The driver's door was in the left side wall. The doors were operated pneumatically from the driver's seat. The passenger compartment with a standing height of 1.9 m offered space for 81 passengers, including 21 seats. The luggage nets and racks in the Jelcz 043 were omitted, as was the roof rack. The interior was lined with varnished pine panels, and the wooden floor was covered with rubber. In addition to the engine-dependent heating, the bus also had an auxiliary heating operated with diesel fuel. A destination display was placed above the windshield.
The Škoda 706RT engine, also imported from the ČSSR, served as the drive. The engine, a six-cylinder diesel engine with direct injection , had a displacement of 11.78 l and an output of 160 hp. The drive unit was completed by a non-synchronized five-speed gearbox. The engine was positioned in the chassis above the front axle. The rear axle was driven by a two-part cardan shaft. Used came leaf-sprung rigid axles with telescopic shock absorbers . The bus was decelerated with pneumatically operated drum brakes on all wheels, which were supported by an engine brake . The steering was a mechanical worm steering with pneumatic assistance. The tires were mounted on Trilex rims . With a vehicle mass of 8.7 t, the permissible total mass was 14.4 t.
The conventional construction consisting of a chassis and a superstructure made it possible to manufacture various body variants. After retiring from active service, buses were converted into workshop and tow trucks. For use on city tours, the roof over the passenger compartment has been removed from some buses.
