Jens-Peter Koester

Jens-Peter Koester (born April 29, 1942 in Magdeburg ) is a retired German professor of applied linguistics and phonetics .

Life path

Jens-Peter Koester attended school in Altmark and after the family moved to the Federal Republic of Westphalia and Lower Saxony. After graduating from high school, in the summer semester of 1963 he began studying general linguistics , philosophy , psychology , pedagogy , English and Romance studies at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel and in the same semester became a member of the Weinheimer Corps Alemannia Kiel. After completing his undergraduate studies, he moved to the Sorbonne in Paris in 1965 , where he also studied phonetics and in 1966 obtained the Diplôme de Phonétique. He returned to Kiel and completed his other courses in 1968 with the state examination for teaching and Magister Artium.

This was followed by employment as a research assistant in English in Kiel and Stuttgart, as a lecturer in German in Reading in England and as a research assistant in phonetics in Hamburg. In 1973 he received a Phonetics major in phonetics summa cum laude with an opus eximium on the history of speech synthesis at the University of Hamburg. phil. PhD.

In 1974 he accepted a professorship for applied linguistics at the University of Trier after he had turned down professorships for applied linguistics at the University of Laval in Quebec and the Free University of Brussels . He also turned down another appointment to a professorship for speech communication at the University of Florida in the USA in 1990.

In Trier, Koester founded the independent subject of phonetics and was appointed to the newly created professorship in 1991, which he held until he retired in 2007. He became internationally known as a phonetician and developed Trier into a scientific stronghold of forensic phonetics. By applying phonetic knowledge, he was able to develop scientific methods that are used in comparative court reports for convicting offenders.

His research interests included general and applied phonetics, forensic communication, applied linguistics, voice, speech and language disorders, phonology as well as English and Romance philology.

As part of the academic self-administration, Koester headed the Phonetics department at Trier University since 1974. From 1991 to 1995 he was Senator of the University of Trier, from 1991 to 1993 Vice Dean of the Department of Linguistics and Literature at the University of Trier, from 1993 to 1995 its dean. Since 1988 he has been the head of the Phonetics Transfer Office at Trier University.

For almost four decades he was involved in international scientific associations. In the International Society of Phonetic Sciences (ISPhS) he was auditor from 1971 to 1987, vice president from 1987 to 1995, secretary general from 1991 to 1998, executive vice president from 1995 to 1998 and president from 1998 to 2003. Since 2003 he has been the former president of the ISPhS. From 1996 to 2002 he was chairman of the research committee of the International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics (IAFPA), from 1997 to 2004 chairman of the IAFPA accreditation committee. Since 2003 he has been a member of the Permanent Council of the Organization of International Congresses of Phonetic Sciences, which is responsible for the scientific planning and content organization of the four-year congress for phonetic sciences.

In 2005 Jens-Peter Koester was awarded membership of the Kösener Corps Marchia Brünn zu Trier.

Honors

Jens-Peter Koester was honored as a "Fellow" in 1979 by the International Society of Phonetic Sciences (ISPhS). In 1985 the ISPhS awarded him the "Kay Elemetrics Award" and in 1986 the "Svend Smith Memorial Award".

The American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) honored him in 1995 as a "Fellow".

The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) awarded Koester a "Fellow" in 1996 and the "Silver Certificate" in 2002.
