Jens Haaning (* 1965 in Hørsholm ) is a Danish conceptual artist .

life and work

Haaning studied at the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich .

For the sound installation Turkish Jokes, in 1994 Jens Haaning installed a loudspeaker that broadcast jokes in Turkish in an Oslo district with a large Turkish population.

For Middelburg Summer 1996 , Haaning relocated the entire production of a nearby textile factory, including the canteen and offices, to the art gallery SBKM De Vleeshal in the city of Middelburg for the duration of the exhibition . Twelve workers of Turkish, Croatian and Iranian origin produced Maras Confectie during the opening hours of the art gallery .

“In some cases, Haaning took advantage of the different tax rates for art objects and consumer goods by declaring trips and plane tickets (Travel Agency, 1997) or groceries (Trade Bartering, 1996; Super Discount, 1998) as works of art and thus selling them at a discount. Haanings (Project Office for the Exchange of Citizenship, 1998) is based on a similar loophole in international legislation, as the voluntary exchange of citizenship that Haaning's office tries to mediate is not expressly prohibited by any country. "

"Since the 1990s, Haaning has created a number of conceptual works of art that, taken together, represent an acute reflection of a complex and changing society in the West."

“Limits that have to be crossed or set, differences, inclusions and exclusions are a central theme in Jens Haaning's work. Because borders - territorial, national, linguistic, social, economic, cultural, legal - regulate the coexistence of different people and interest groups. The Danish artist became known for his work that criticized institutions in the 1990s. His projects ask about the political in art when they sound out the interface between social reality and the art institutional context in a way that is as astonishing as it is profound. Haaning is primarily concerned with the question of how a society is constituted and how power is expressed and communicated in it. Who is represented in what form, who even has a vote? "
