History and description

The settlement of the Dietenberg took place in several phases. The oldest traces of settlement date from around 2400 BC and can be assigned to the Neolithic and Copper Age . The discoveries from the Copper Age, such as a cylinder seal and a disc decorated with spirals, show strong similarities with the Lasinja culture . During the Urnfield period there was already a village settlement on Dietenberg, and a cremation grave from around 1000 BC was discovered. Finds from the Hallstatt period were particularly uncovered on the eastern spur of the Dietenberg .

In the middle of the 2nd century, during the Latène period , the hillside settlement on Dietenberg was repopulated, this time by the Celts . At first there was only a small population, but towards the end of the Latène period the summit area of the Dietenberg was terraced and swell-beam houses were built. One of the houses discovered from this period was 12 meters long and 8 meters wide. Until around 100 AD there are also indications of a Roman settlement on Dietenberg, which probably also had a temple.

The Dietenberg was not settled again until the 11th century, after the Dietenburg was built. After a Celtic coin was discovered in 1946, there were several robbery excavations on Dietenberg until 1975 . During excavations carried out by the Universalmuseum Joanneum in 1976 and 1977, the settlement traces of the hilltop settlement were uncovered.

Since a new water reservoir was to be built in the area of the hillside settlement and larger amounts of the topsoil had to be removed, two search cuts were made on April 12, 2012 . Ceramic remains from the Latène period and older were found. However, due to a communication error, the executing construction company erected a site fence on April 18, with parts of the summit plateau already being removed and possible traces of settlement destroyed. An excavation carried out by the St: WUK-Kulturpark Hengist association between April 29 and May 18, 2013 finally uncovered an artificially created trench, the significance of which is unknown. In 2016 the hillside settlement on Dietenberg was placed under monument protection.
