The Dieterich Castle is an Outbound hilltop castle in the market town division side in the West Styria . The history of the castle goes back to the beginning of the 11th century. It is one of the oldest documented castles in Styria.

Location and name

The exact location of the castle stable can no longer be precisely determined today. The castle was probably located on the Dietenberg , which is located in the northeast of today's market town of Ligist. A massive layer of medieval rubble, which was cut in 1976/77 during excavations at the hillside settlement on Dietenberg, suggests that the castle was on the eastern spur of the Dietenberg, not far from what is now a water reservoir.

The name part Dieten- is derived from the male name Dioto , which is a short form of a name composed of the Old High German diot for people. The castle name means something like Dioto Castle .

history

The Dietenburg was probably built around the year 1000 directly by the Eppensteiners or on their behalf on the Dietenberg in order to monitor the road from Judenburg to the Mark an der Mur along the Kainach . It is possible that the Dietenburg was built on the site of an older Slavic defense structure. The only documented mention of the Dietenburg comes from a boundary description of the Piber parish from around 1066. It is one of the oldest documented castles in Styria alongside the Primaresburg . The servants employed by the Eppensteiners on the Dietenburg probably later moved to Ligist and probably built Ligist Castle towards the end of the 12th century . It is not known when the Dietenburg was left.

During excavations carried out by the Universalmuseum Joanneum in 1976/77 on the prehistoric hilltop settlement on Dietenberg , a massive layer of medieval rubble with the remains of thousands of clay pots, which probably belonged to the former castle, was cut.

description

According to Robert Baravalle and Herwig Ebner , the former castle complex extended over two reinforced plateaus. On these plateaus you can still see some of the walls that lie under the sward today.
