Jerónimo Giménez y Bellido (born October 10, 1854 in Seville , † February 19, 1923 in Madrid ) was a Spanish violinist and composer.

Life

At the age of twelve he was first violinist in the orchestra of the Teatro Principal in his hometown and five years later also took over its direction. Scholarships enabled him to study in Paris , where he won first prizes in harmony and composition. He then came to Madrid via Italy, where he found an influential patron in Ruperto Chapí y Lorente . He took over the management of the orchestra of the Teatro de la Zarzuela and his future should also lie in this genre. From 1887 to 1920 he composed several of these stage works every year, several of them together with Amadeo Vives in particular , but also with other composers.

He created almost exclusively Zarzuelas and showed himself to be a master of this form, as on the one hand he was a technically excellent composer who knew how to use the orchestral sound skillfully and effectively, on the other hand he had an ear for Spanish folk music, which he consistently incorporated into his works effectively knew. The works “De vuelta del vivero” (1895), “La boda de Luis Alonso” (1897) and “La tempranica” (1900) are to be emphasized because of their lasting success.

In 1997/98 the play El barbero de Sevilla (1901) was performed at the Braunschweig State Theater under the title “El Barbero or Liebling, pack the castanets”.
