Murghal tunnel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Murgentunnel is a 4745 meter long, double-lane railway tunnel on the new Mattstetten – Rothrist line of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).

The tunnel, opened in 2004, begins east of the Bern / Aargau canton border formed by the Murg river and circles the Aargau town of Murgenthal in an elongated arc . The construction, which was completed on time, could be billed a lot cheaper than estimated.

Tunneling

The double-lane tube was excavated with the same tunnel boring machine with which the two tubes of the Bözberg motorway tunnel had already been excavated. It has a shield diameter of 11.98 m and a length of 8.8 m. The motors with an output of 3,200 kW develop a contact pressure of 64,000 kN. After this operation, the machine was used for the construction of the Flüelen bypass of the A4 national road .

Railway technology

As usual with newer tunnel constructions, but otherwise not in use on the Swiss rail network up to this point in time, the Murghaltunnel was provided with a slab track (type "SBB Bözberg / STEDEF") .
