Jeremy Gaige

Jeremy Gaige (born October 9, 1927 in New York City , † February 19, 2011 in Philadelphia ) was an American chess journalist and historian.

Life

Gaige was the son of the theater producer Crosby Gaige . After training in schools and college, he served in the US Army Medical Corps . In 1951 he graduated from Columbia University College with a Bachelor of Arts .

In 1952 Gaige began a journalistic career, initially as a runner at the New York Times . After learning to play chess in 1958, Gaige was particularly interested in chess biographies, for which he found no systematic or quotable material. During his work he corrected a lot of biographical and chess historical data through his own research. His work culminated in 1987 with the publication of the Chess Personalia with over 14,000 entries.

Gaige was inducted into the US Chess Hall of Fame in 2007 and was a lifelong honorary member of the Chess Journalists of America.

In 1951 Gaige married Elise Cookson, from whom he was divorced in 1956. In 1958 or February 1959 he married Harriet Elizabeth Oken. From this lasting marriage a daughter was born. Gaige died of emphysema on February 19, 2011 in the Spring Garden District of Philadelphia .
