Life

White began a career in public administration after attending the Dorset Grammar School in 1967. From 1970 he worked in London, first in the public health administration in Islington and then as department head in the building administration and in the health administration in Haringey and Hackney . For this he passed the administrative examinations "Diploma of the Public Health Inspectors' Education Board" and "Diploma in Housing Management of the Institute of Housing". Between 1989 and 1995 he was the administrative director of the London Borough of Hackney for about 250,000 residents. After that he was one of the three ombudsmen for the English local government until 2009 .

In addition to his job, he began in 1971 in Spitalfields in the residential complex "Rothschild Buildings" to record local history using the method of oral history. The Marxist historian Raphael Samuel , professor at Ruskin College , introduced him to historical methodology. A second study of the working-class neighborhood on Campbell Road in Islington followed in 1986. After a professional hiatus, he published a three-volume history of modern London from 1700 after 1997.

Since 2009 White has been teaching at Birkbeck College as a visiting professor .
