Jerzy Aleksander Kondracki (born November 1, 1908 in Warsaw ; † April 13, 1998 near Villach ) was a Polish professor of geography and geology ( geomorphology ) at the University of Warsaw . His life's work was the geomorphological division of Poland .

Act

Kondracki had been an assistant at the Faculty of Geography at the University of Warsaw since 1933, where he received his doctorate in 1938 with a study of the morphology and hydrography of the Braslauer lakes. During the Second World War , Kondracki held geographical lectures as a prisoner of war in officers' camp II C. After the war ended in 1945 he became an assistant professor at his university.

In 1952, Kondracki took over the chair of physical geography at the newly established Institute of Geography at Warsaw University. A year later he became dean, in 1954 an associate professor, in 1969 a full professor and in 1970 director of the institute. Since 1977 Kondracki headed the Institute of Physiogeographic Sciences. He was also a representative of Poland in an expert commission of the UN , which dealt with the standardization of geographical names. As chairman, he headed the Polish standardization committee Komisja Standaryzacji Nazw Geograficznych poza Granicami Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej (KSNG) from 1977–1985 and 1987–1997 .

Kondracki has been concerned with the physiogeographical regionalization of Poland since 1955. Its classification with decimal coding was presented in 1964 at the International Geographical Congress in London . His proposal for regionalization of the country followed in Warsaw for two years. Corrections and normalization followed until 1991. The map series Regiony fizycznogeograficzne formed the end of the work . which Kondracki published with Andrzej Richling in 1994.

Jerzy Kondracki died at the age of ninety while on vacation in Carinthia .
