amateur

Cuellar had a successful amateur career and was able to win several medals. He had a staggering record of 230 wins and 10 losses.

Professional career

He won his first five fights all ahead of schedule. In his sixth fight he had to make ends meet for the first time. In 2009 he beat Luis Armando Juarez (10-0) on points. On April 16, 2011 he became Argentine champion when he knocked out Ramon Armando Torres hard in the 4th round. In the same year he suffered his first and so far only defeat. In 2012 he captured the WBA Fedelatin title and in the following year he became interim world champion of the WBA association with a point victory over the until then undefeated Claudio Marrero .

He defended that title against Rico Ramos, Juan Manuel Lopez and Ruben Tamayo in 2014. The fight for the regular world title took place on June 6, 2015 at the StubHub Center in Carson , California against the Armenian Vic Darchinyan . Cuellar managed to knock out Darchinyan, who lives in Glendale , in the 8th round and thus to conquer the regular world championship belt of the WBA.

After defending his title in December 2015 against Jonathan Oquendo , he lost the world championship belt to Abner Mares on December 10, 2016 in Los Angeles . He has not fought since then. For the [obsolete] April 21, 2018 a world title fight in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn against the previously undefeated Gervonta Davis for the vacant WBA super featherweight title is announced. Davis described Cuellar in advance as his “probably toughest opponent so far”.
