Jessé José Freire de Souza (born March 29, 1960 ) is a Brazilian sociologist .

Life

Souza studied law at the Universidade de Brasília and then sociology at the University of Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1991. He also completed a postdoctoral degree in psychology at the New School for Social Research in New York in 1995 . In 2008 he received his habilitation at the University of Flensburg .

From 2003 to 2013 Souza was professor at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora and head of the inequality research center there. He then headed the state Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (IPEA), a socio-economic think tank of the Brazilian government. In 2018 he left Brazil and now lives in Berlin. In September 2019 he took up a visiting professorship at the Paris Sorbonne .

Jessé de Souza is one of the most famous sociologists in Brazil.
