Jesse Lee Beauchamp (born November 3, 1942 in Glendale, California ) is an American physical chemist.

Beauchamp studied at Caltech with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and received his doctorate in chemistry in 1967 with John D. Baldeschwieler at Harvard University . In 1967 he became Noyes Instructor at Caltech, 1969 Assistant Professor and 1974 Professor of Chemistry.

He worked on various applications of mass spectrometry (and related device development), including for the detection of explosives in airplanes. His research fields include chemistry of ions in gas phase, applications of ion cyclotron resonance spectroscopy in chemistry, determination of biomolecular structures, structure, properties and reactions of organic ions, chemical images of surfaces. In 2015 he lists as research fields of his group: reactions in the cluster phase, sequencing of biomolecules and their post-translational modification and reactions at the interface between air and liquids.

In 1999 he received the Peter Debye Award . He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of Sciences . He was a Sloan Research Fellow from 1968 to 1970 and a Guggenheim Fellow in 1976/77. In 1978 he received the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry and in 2003 the Fank H. Field and Joe L. Franklin Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mass Spectrometry .

He was on various scientific committees, such as from 1996 in the Committee for Safety (Safety and Security) of the US President and 1993 to 1997 Chairman of the Committee for Aviation Safety.

He has been married since 1982 and has five children.
