Jesse Milliner

Jesse Milliner (* 1973 in Cologne ) is a German jazz keyboardist and arranger. He is a professor at the Mainz University of Music .

Live and act

Milliner received violin lessons at the age of four, from 1983 he was a student at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne, majoring in piano, before later choosing bass as a second major. From 1992 to 1996 he studied jazz piano at the Folkwang University of Music in Essen . He then deepened jazz composition at the Cologne University of Music (1998–2001) and film music and sound design at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy (1996–1999). He was tutored at the Manhattan School of Music by Bob Mintzer and David Liebman . With the dissertation "Exploring Musical Forms in Jazz" he did his PhD in 2006 in Miami .

Milliner has also emerged as a member of the Conexion Latina , the Dietrich Koch Big Band (album Berlin Cookbook ), the Andy Winter Group (album delicate move ) and von Reiner Witzel's Venue .

He is the recipient of the WDR Jazz Prize 2007 for composition. The jury recognized him as an "astonishingly mature talent" with a great knowledge of the American tradition. His preference is to have thematic parts performed a cappella for changing sections of the Big Band . Milliner also wrote compositions for the film.

In autumn 2007 he took over as professor in the jazz and popular music department at the Mainz University of Music. Since February 2011 he has also been the university's prorector.
