history

At the instigation of the Kuttenberg mint master and eager Catholic Vilém Illburk z Vřesovic, the Jesuits came to the city in 1626. In the 1660s, the Vienna- born architect Giovanni Domenico Orsi de Orsini was commissioned to construct a building with enough space for all the activities of the order. The Jesuits did not move into the largely unfinished building until 1678. After Orsi's death, Carlo Lurago - both of whom had already made a name for themselves as builders of the Clementinum in Prague - continued the construction work, which was finally completed around 1750.

In 1773, Emperor Joseph II dissolved the Jesuit order in the Habsburg monarchy . The building complex then served the military administration as barracks . In 1778 a hospital was established in the north wing.

Building description

Jesuit college in Kutná Hora

Architect Orsi had chosen an E-shaped floor plan for the monumental, early Baroque college building. For financial reasons, however, only the current F-shaped floor plan was implemented. This was later reinterpreted to the effect that the "F" form in honor of Emperors Ferdinand II and Ferdinand III. was chosen.

The architecture of the college is relatively simple in accordance with the Jesuit order rules, only the front is reminiscent of an early baroque Italian palace.

The figure gallery along the east side of the Jesuit college was built on an artificially raised terrace. Franz Baugut created the statues of twelve saints of the order between 1703 and 1717, including Ignatius von Loyola and Franz Xaver , as well as the Bohemian patron saint , St. Wenceslas . The gallery is reminiscent of the two rows of figures on Charles Bridge in Prague.

The demolition of the central tower on the east side in 1843 meant a major intervention in the overall appearance of the building complex, which was carried out for structural reasons. The covered, free-floating corridor from the college to the Barbaradom, which was built in the 1730s, was removed at the end of the 19th century.
