Yevgeny Pinchassowitsch Lichtman

Evgeni Pinchassowitsch Lichtman , Russian Евгений Пинхасович Лихтман , English transcription Evgeny Pinkhasovich Likhtman, (born January 12, 1946 in Moscow ) is a Russian physicist and one of the pioneers of supersymmetry .

Even though he had passed the entrance exams for Lomonosov University in 1962, Lichtman was initially unable to study there (and at other prestigious Moscow universities) because of his Jewish descent (the result of a medical examination was formally put forward). Only after the advocacy of his teachers was he allowed to study, but he was refused to continue his studies until his doctorate. In 1968 he moved to the Lebedev Institute , where he received his doctorate in 1971 under Juri Golfand . After that he was at the All-Soviet Institute for Scientific and Technical Information ( WINITI ) from 1971 . In 1989 he received the Tamm Prize of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.

In 1970 he and his teacher Juri Abramowitsch Golfand published an extension of the algebra of the generators of the Poincaré group of the theory of relativity with spinors , in which the first supersymmetric four-dimensional field theory was introduced. Golfand was already familiar with the extension of Poincaré algebra in 1968 when he was looking for ways out of no-go theorems such as the Coleman-Mandula theorem and discussing Bose-Fermi symmetry with colleagues. A contribution by Golfand to this at the 15th International High Energy Physics Congress in Kiev in 1970 was previously rejected, and the publication in the JETP Letters had to be severely shortened due to the publication practice of this journal (the FIAN report by Likthman and a later publication was more detailed by Golfand and Likthman in the Tamm Festschrift 1972). Shortly after its first publication, it was followed by an independent publication by Dmitri Volkov (Volkov) and Vladimir Akulov . Likhtman continued to publish on supersymmetry and was the first to point out in one of his follow-up works that vacuum energy (and thus its contribution to the cosmological constant) disappears in an (unbroken) supersymmetric field theory. He also pointed out another important characteristic of supersymmetrical theories, that the one-loop contribution to the boson mass does not diverge quadratically as in conventional quantum field theories, but logarithmically like the one-loop correction to the fermion mass (an outlook that the divergences in higher order perturbation theory cancel out).

His son Alexei Likhtman (1972-2016) was a solid-state physicist at the University of Leeds and then a professor at the University of Reading.

In 1989 he received the Tamm Prize .
