The Jico deer mouse ( Habromys simulatus ) is a rodent in the burrower family that is found in Mexico .

features

With a total length of 168 to 203 mm, including a 78 to 111 mm long tail, the Jico deer mouse is a small mouse-like animal. It has hind feet 21 to 24 mm long, ears 16 to 19 mm long and weighs 17 to 19 g. The dark brown top is clearly delimited from the white bottom. The tail is dark in color except for a thin white line on the underside. There are bright spots in the middle of the dark feet. Compared to other members of the genus, Habromys simulatus has a smaller and more flattened cranial cavity . The very small third molar is characteristic .

distribution

The species is only known from a small area of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains in eastern Mexico. It is believed to be common in the south of the state of Hidalgo and up to central areas of the state of Veracruz . The Jico deer mouse was registered between 1830 and 2000 meters above sea level. It can be found in cloud and cloud forests as well as in other moist mountain forests with oaks and pines.

Finds from Oaxaca probably belong to another species of the Habromys genus .

Way of life

The specimens climb trees where they hide in epiphytes such as mosses or bromeliads . These plants also represent the animal's food. Nests are usually 10 to 12 meters above the ground. In studies, specimens of Peromyscus levipes , Reithrodontomys mexicanus and Megadontomys nelsoni were caught at the same time .

threat

Documented finds are limited to the area around the cities of Xico and Zacualpan . Coffee plantations later emerged in these areas. It is assumed that one of the two populations will continue to exist with around 50 fully grown specimens. Intensive forest management and the adaptation of the landscape to human needs will continue in the region. Habromys simulatus is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN .
