Xico (also Xicochimalco ) is a city with about 20,000 inhabitants and the capital of a municipality (municipio) with a total of about 40,000 inhabitants in the mountains of the Mexican state of Veracruz . Xico has been the seat of the Diocese of Xico since 1963 . In 2011 the city was classified as Pueblo Mágico because of its charming historical site .
Location and climate
The city of Xico is located in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental of the state of Veracruz at an altitude of about 1300 m ; the capital of the state, Xalapa , is just under 23 km (driving distance) to the northeast. Despite the altitude, the climate is often humid and rainy; Rain (approx. 1875 mm / year) falls mainly in the months of June to October.

The vast majority of the population is of Indian descent ( Totonak ), but there are also numerous mestizos .
economy
Agriculture (especially the cultivation of coffee , corn and vegetables) plays the dominant role in the community's economic life. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds are also important for urban life.
history
A small Indian settlement already existed in pre- Hispanic times, but it was not until the Spanish colonial rulers founded a larger town with a regular road network here in the 16th century. At the beginning of the 17th century the church of Santa María Magdalena was built . In 1963 the city became the seat of a bishop.
