Jill Murphy (born July 5, 1949 in London , † August 18, 2021 in St. Mabyn, Cornwall ) was a British writer and illustrator of children's books. She was best known for her children's novels about witches and her picture books. Her books have also been adapted for television and the stage. She has been called "one of the most engaging children's writers and illustrators in the country."

biography

Born in London, Murphy became interested in writing and drawing at the age of six. Although she was not particularly good at other school subjects, she had already built an extensive library of handwritten and illustrated books in elementary school. She enjoyed reading boarding school stories that provided material and inspiration for Miss Cackle's Academy on The Worst Witch , as well as the Ursuline High School at Wimbledon, which she attended. She grew up a Roman Catholic but no longer practiced the faith in later years. Her mother, who stayed at home, was a "book mad" and her father was an Irish engineer.

Murphy gave birth to a son in the spring of 1990. Her marriage to the potter Roger Michell ended in divorce. She lived long in London and in recent years in St Mabyn, Cornwall, where she died in hospital on August 18, 2021 at the age of 72 of complications from cancer.
