Jim McGovern (born November 17, 1956 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish Labor Party politician .

Life

McGovern was born in Glasgow in 1956, the son of a roofer and a worker. As a child, he moved to Dundee , his mother's hometown. Among other things, he attended the Lawside Academy there . After training in 1973, he worked as a glazier for 24 years. He is married and has two children. McGovern is a member of the GMB union .

Political career

Between 1994 and 1996 McGovern served on the Tayside Regional Council for the Labor Party . After Labor MP Ernie Ross , who had represented the constituency of Dundee West in the British House of Commons since 1979 , did not run for the 2005 general election, the party established McGovern as his successor. On election day he received the majority of votes with 44.6% and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. There he served as Parliamentary Private Secretary under Pat McFadden in the Ministry of Economic Affairs between 2007 and 2008 . After defending his mandate in the following general election in 2010 , McGovern announced in the run-up to the 2015 elections that he would not apply for another term for health reasons. As his successor, the Labor Party set up Michael Marra , who, however, could not prevail against the SNP candidate Chris Law .
