In the same month, the club, which participated in the premier season of the Football League Third Division , also signed his brother Jack . After registering as a professional in the Football League in September 1920, he initially played for the reserve team. In late November 1920 Rutherford made his league debut against Swansea Town , in which he played Wally Littlein the position of left defender, and was part of the regular team for the remainder of the season. In total, he came to 26 league and three FA Cup appearances when Brighton finished the season in 18th place in the 24-team league.
