Jinack Island (also spelled Jinnack , Djinak or Ginak ) is an island of around 15.2 square kilometers in the West African state of Gambia and a small part of Senegal . The island is part of the Niumi National Park nature reserve .

geography

The approximately thirteen kilometers long, narrow crescent-shaped and 700 meters wide island in north-south orientation is north of the town of Barra and extends to the border with Senegal, with the outermost northern cape of the island with an area of slightly more than three square kilometers, with the small settlement Djinak, part of the national territory of Senegal. The state border runs more than 100 kilometers along the latitude .

On the western edge lies an eleven kilometer stretch of beach facing the Atlantic Ocean in the Gambia estuary . The mouth is defined by two outer points: the northern point of Jinack Islands on Jinnak Creek and Cape St. Mary near Bakau .

The side facing away from the sea is separated from the mainland by the only 50 meters narrow Bolong , the Niji Bolong , so that one can hardly speak of an island. The Niji Bolong flows into the Massarinko Bolong in the north , which flows into the Jinnak Creek on Senegalese territory. There are extensive mangrove forests along all of the waters .

colonization

The island is only sparsely populated, with two Senegalese settlements on the northern tip of the Massarinko Bolong. In the northeast is the Gambian settlement Jinack Kajata and to the south the settlement Jinack Niji . There are also some lodges that are used for tourism . Jinack Island is touted as " Paradise Island ".
